Melissa Hagemann

Open Society Institute
Senior Program Officer
I lead the Open Society Foundations’ work on Access to Knowledge. I have been deeply involved in the development of the Open Access and Open Education movements, having co-organized the meeting which led to the Budapest Open Access Initiative which first defined Open Access, as well as the meeting which led to the Cape Town Open Education Declaration, which first proposed the strategy of advocating for public access to publicly funded educational materials. More recently, my work has expanded to focus on copyright reform, given the pivotal role that copyright plays in Access to Knowledge. I am particularly interested in discussing how our work on Access to Knowledge can be strengthened by building synergies and collaborations across the Open Access, OER, and copyright reform communities.
